Panera Announces #FREECOFFEE4SUMMER!

Just announced from Panera:  #FREECOFFEE4SUMMER—anyone signed up for the MyPanera+Coffee subscription will enjoy free, unlimited premium hot coffee, hot tea and iced coffee until Labor Day. Sign-ups started this week and will be open until July 4th.

Guests can get any size, any flavor once every two hours with unlimited refills in the bakery-cafe—that means plenty of coffee to pair with your favorite bagel, sandwich or afternoon sweet treat. Panera's drip and iced coffee offerings include two coffee blends—Light Roast and Dark Roast, freshly ground every day and made from 100% Arabica whole beans. Both coffee blends are available, along with Decaf and Hazelnut, as part of the coffee subscription program.

"We asked America if they wanted it, and the answer was a resounding YES—so we're excited to kick off a summer of free, unlimited premium coffee for our guests through Labor Day," said Eduardo Luz, Chief Brand & Concept Officer for Panera Bread. "This is our way of sharing the famous Panera Warmth in a new way, as we may be all celebrating summer a little differently this year."

Panera changed the game for coffee and tea drinkers earlier this March when it launched the MyPanera+ unlimited coffee subscription, eliminating the price barrier and false choices between premium coffee and delicious food.  Panera is the first national restaurant company to offer an unlimited subscription for high-quality hot drip coffee, iced coffee and hot tea.

Guests can order coffee nationwide in Panera bakery-cafes, on Panera's e-commerce site, and via the Panera app (delivery restrictions apply).  If you're on-the-go or just not quite ready to come in, you can order your coffee via Panera Curbside and contactless Delivery, as Panera continues to take extraordinary steps to serve our communities safely.

The subscription is regularly available for $8.99/month plus tax, and Panera will pause the renewal payments for current subscribers through Labor Day, so that everyone can enjoy a summer of free, unlimited premium coffee.

BBQ & Beans, Grillin' with Coffee

Perk up your poultry! Wake up your steak! Coffee can be a great addition to many recipes. As a dry rub, marinade, or brine, coffee can play a big part in summertime entertaining—especially when it comes to grilling.

In addition to being a “get me going in the morning” necessity, coffee can enhance the flavor of meats and many chefs use it year-round to take tried and true recipes to the next level.

Summertime is the perfect time to incorporate coffee and coffee blends into your cooking. Not only does coffee enhance the flavor of your meat by offering a subtle flavor, it also helps caramelize the outside creating great color and texture.

Pre-packaged rubs are available at many gourmet stores nationwide, but why not try experimenting to create your own using your favorite ingredients? Any freshly ground coffee beans will work just fine, many recommend a dark roast for the biggest coffee flavor, and strong meats and a lighter roast if you're looking for something a little more subtle.

For chicken, try adding ground coffee to lemon peel, orange peel, kosher salt, and dried basil. For ribs or beef, how about some ground espresso or French roast coffee with chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, coriander, cumin, kosher salt and pepper.

Unlike store-bought, pre-packaged rubs, you’ll have to experiment to come up with a blend that appeals to your own individual palate. But…soon you’ll be cooking like a pro!

Local Coffee Company Partners with First Coast Surfrider

Civilized Coffee, a Jacksonville-based coffee company, has teamed up with First Coast Surfrider to create a special blend of "Surfrider Select" coffee to help support clean oceans and waterways in Northeast Florida. Sales will be available started June 20 - International Surfing Day - with a portion of proceeds to go directly to First Coast Surfrider to help them continue their mission and activism.

"The First Coast Chapter is excited to announce a collaboration with Civilized Coffee just in time for International Surfing Day," said Kassidy Kinkel, treasurer of the First Coast Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. "The chapter is constantly working to protect the coasts we love, and this special day gives us the opportunity to pause and celebrate our waves and beaches. This International Surfing Day, go for a solo surf session or do a solo beach cleanup, and support First Coast Surfrider with Civilized Coffee's 'Surfrider Select' roast."

An exceptional blend of Kenyan and Ethiopian arabica beans grown high in the mountains of Africa, Surfrider Select is precession-roasted to create smooth flavors of milk chocolate, brown sugar and hazelnut. Developed with beach lovers and ocean advocates in mind, its rich flavor profile makes it ideal for sunrise surf sessions to twilight beach walks.

The First Coast Chapter of Surfrider was founded in 2002 and spans the First Coast of Florida, from the Georgia border to the end of Anastasia Island. Their mission is to protect our oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.

"Civilized Coffee believes in open, honest, civilized conversations, and we believe our collaboration with Surfrider can bring some light on the necessary conversations that are needed to help protect our oceans everywhere," said Mark Patterson, Civilized Coffee co-founder. "Our collaboration with First Coast Surfrider has a local voice with a global impact."

Civilized Coffee is built on a dual passion for coffee and supporting local communities. Before launching the company in 2017, co-founder Jeff Norton traveled to East Africa to meet and work with local small-scale farmers, where he learned about their native land's climate and agricultural traditions. By working directly with these local farmers, Civilized Coffee is able to support their practices, culture and continued economic growth.

Surfrider Select is available whole bean or ground and is for sale for $14.95 via https://www.civilizedcoffee.com/all-coffee. It will soon be available for sale by retailers that share the mission for clean oceans.

The Power of Honey

For registered dietitian Maggie Michalczyk, incorporating natural ingredients into her everyday diet is an important step for feeling her best. When she's looking to add a flavorful addition to her mealtime favorites, honey reigns supreme, and Michalczyk has partnered with the National Honey Board to share #NaturallyWithHoney mealtime inspiration.

Michalczyk has simplified mealtime with recipe formulas that are easy to follow thought-starters to showcase how a few ingredients, complemented by the simple addition of honey, can create a tasty, balanced dish or drink.

Nutty Hot Honey Bowl takes your regular protein bowl up a few levels with the hot honey nut mixture that adds new flavor to the dish as the honey perfectly complements the spicy notes from the cayenne pepper. As an added crunchy bonus, the hot honey nut mixture will likely leave you with leftovers which can serve as a delicious snack.

Peaches and Honey Cocktail is summertime in a glass and the DIY honey lime syrup plays a key role in the naturally sweetened beverage. Plus, it's easy to make – it's simply honey, warm water and lime juice combined. The best part about her recipes is that they can easily be tweaked based on what's currently available in your fridge and pantry.

"The reality is that wellness is easy to over-complicate, but my philosophy is to keep it simple by focusing on unprocessed ingredients," says Michalczyk. "Honey is a wholesome choice when I'm whipping up something delicious and satisfying because it has so many varietals with unique flavors, making it an easy addition to any brunch, lunch, dinner or snack. And don't forget beverages, including cocktails and mocktails."

Michalczyk also shared her go-to nutrition tips to keep top of mind as we dig into summertime:

1.   Satiate the Sweet Tooth

  • Is your sweet tooth sabotaging you after every meal? Try sipping on a dessert-flavored tea like apple cinnamon or chocolate orange with a spoonful of honey. Honey adds flavor and it's 100% pure. How sweet is that?

2.   Dress to Impress

  • Store bought salad dressings often contain a long list of ingredients. Make your own dressing at home with olive oil, honey, lemon juice, mustard, turmeric, fresh herbs and salt and pepper. The honey serves as an emulsifier that helps to bind and thicken dressings.

3.   Bake with Goodness

  • Wondering how to use less sugar in your favorite baked goods? Consider using honey in things like quick bread, cookies, homemade pancakes and more. Honey gives baked goods a uniquely deliciously flavor and because it's sweeter than sugar, you can use less of it.

Ooh La La—French Press Basics from Illy

While we all continue to stay close to home and are saddened to see that our local coffee shop remains temporarily closed, why not try some new coffee brewing techniques at home?  Easy to prepare and delightfully delicious, French Press coffee is a technique anyone can master—especially with these guidelines from Illy.

A cylindrical pot with a plunger and built-in filter screen that presses hot water through ground coffee: that’s the simple beauty of the French press, method of choice for many all over the world, creating an earthy, rich taste in your daily cup of coffee.

The secret is all in the grind: choose medium, with uniformity and consistency throughout.  Very coarse grinds may clog the filter, while very fine grinds will pass through the filter, muddying the results.

French Press D-I-Y:

Place the pot on a dry, flat surface. Hold the handle firmly, then pull out the plunger
Add a heaping tablespoon (7-8 grams) of coffee to the pot per 200 ml (6.7 oz) of water
Pour hot water—not quite boiling—into the pot, and gently stir
Carefully reinsert the plunger into the pot, stopping just above the water and ground coffee (do not plunge yet), and let stand for 3-4 minutes
Press the plunger down slowly, exerting steady pressure
After each use, wash the pot with water and mild detergent, and dry thoroughly

The plunger pot, invented in France in the mid-1800s, takes different names throughout the world: French Press, melior, coffee machine piston, plunger coffee, press pot. Pretty soon you will press like a pro. Find the right tools for making a perfect French Press coffee—check out a variety of French Press coffee makers and ground drip coffee ground to perfection at Illy.
