Virtual Tea Events Celebrate Chocolate & Jane Austen—Samples Ship to Your Home

Virtual events offer education and entertainment, yes, but they offer so much more—a great value, a fun experience with friends, the ability to try new products, and get expert instruction from experts in their fields.

Tea and Chocolate

Spotlight on tea and chocolate—9/26!  This oh-so-delicious and can’t-be-missed virtual event is designed specifically for tea lovers!  It offers expert guidance, samples delivered to your home, and an interactive experience with fellow tea lovers.  Please keep in mind that due to their popularity, virtual events often sell out fast, so you’ll want to act quickly if you wish to join (or give as a gift).

What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon celebrating two of life's greatest pleasures: tea and chocolate. The seminar serves up to 3 people from one location and includes the teas and truffles shipped to your home. The seminar will be led by experts in their fields, the owner of Open Door Tea, a popular tearoom and café (Stratford, CT), and the head chocolatier from Melt Chocolatier (Milford, CT).

You will receive loose-leaf tea and the custom-created chocolate truffles to pair with the teas:

Anxi-Oolong Hairy Crab: An uncommon, low-production, specialty tea from the village of Da Ping, Anxi County, in the Fujian Province of China. Also known as Mao Xie, this is a refreshing low-oxidized oolong, sometimes referred to as a “jade” oolong since it’s closer to a green tea.

Keemun: a Chinese black tea with a smoky aroma and an earthy smooth flavor.

Earl Gray Red: a zesty, organic rooibos tea with overtones of bergamot, the signature flavor of Earl Grey tea.

PLUS: 9-piece chocolate truffle collection, custom made to pair with the selected teas, 3 each of hazelnut milk chocolate truffles, espresso dark chocolate truffles, and orange dark chocolate truffles.

Jane Austen

Celebrating Jane Austen on 11/14!  Back by popular demand, this virtual event sold out in record time when it was offered earlier this year and a great time was had by all who attended.

Join in the fun and celebrate Jane Austen with teas created to reflect literature’s most romantic, endearing, best-loved, characters. With well-known classic regency-era works like Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma, Jane Austen has achieved success as a published writer…and Bingley’s Tea has achieved success with their Jane Austen Tea Series.

A cup of tea and your favorite book, what an amazing combination! The artisans at Bingley’s Tea have created ideal companion teas for those with taste buds as romantic and adventurous as their imagination. The Jane Austen Tea Series features premium custom-blended teas designed to reflect literature’s most endearing and romantic figures.

In this 90-minute virtual event, you’ll celebrate the works of Jane Austen through a guided tea talk and tasting led by tea sommelier, lifelong member of the Jane Austen Society, and owner of Bingley’s Tea, Julia Matson. Fully immersed in the fashion and traditions of the Regency era, Julia will guide you through a tasting of four teas—each based on a character from a well-known Austen novel, each with a unique story.

So, gather your friends, dress the part, set the table, sit back and relax as we celebrate the most-popular characters from the collective works of Jane Austen and the teas that were inspired by them, including:

Anne Elliot Tea: from Persuasion, considered perhaps the most romantic of Austen’s novels. Our heroine wins the hero, (and our hearts) not through ribbons and maneuvers, but through the nature of her heart. We will explore this Mao Feng green tea, which is approachable, dependable, and without pretension.

Emma Tea: Youthful, naive and occasionally sharp-tongued Emma. This blend will include green tea, strawberries obligingly picked from Mr. Knightley’s estate, roses for her match making efforts and a touch of hibiscus for that sharp tongue.

Fanny Price Tea: Mansfield Park. Not often chosen as a favorite of Austen’s works but always a good book for debate. Many see Fanny as a weak and milquetoast heroine compared to Elizabeth Bennet. However, we will share why we’ve chosen a strong, comforting vanilla black tea to represent her. Let’s see if you agree!

Lucy Steele Tea: Sense and Sensibility. She is categorized by most as an Austen villain! Let’s discuss this character as we sip this charming country peach and apricot black tea that smoothly weaves over caramel and vanilla notes.

Back to School: 10 Things You Need to Know About Tea

Time to get haircuts and school supplies for the kids…and time for all of us to learn something interesting about tea, next to water, the world’s most widely consumed beverage.  The Tea Association of the U.S.A. offers these tea facts.

  • Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world next to water, and can be found in almost 80% of all U.S. households. It is the only beverage commonly served hot or iced, anytime, anywhere, for any occasion. On any given day, over 159 million Americans are drinking tea.
  • In 2017, Americans consumed over 84 billion servings of tea, or more than 3.8 billion gallons. About 86% of all tea consumed was black tea, 13% was green Tea, and the small remaining amount was oolong, white and dark tea.
  • Woman Drinking TeaThe U.S. continues as the third largest importer of tea in the world after Russia and Pakistan, and literally the only western country to grow in both tea imports and consumption.
  • Approximately four in five consumers drink tea, with Millennials being the most likely (87% of millennials drink tea).
  • On any given day, more than one half of the American population drinks tea. On a regional basis, the South and Northeast have the greatest concentration of tea drinkers.
  • Approximately 80% of tea consumed in America is iced.
  • Tea is nearly 5,000 years old. Purportedly discovered in 2737 BC by Chinese Emperor Shen-Nung, aka “The Divine Healer”. As legend tells us, some tea leaves accidentally blew into the Emperor’s pot of boiling water and created the first tea brew. According to Chinese tea scholars, the Emperor, as a botanical explorer, accidentally poisoned himself some 85 times, each time being cured by this wonderful tea brew.
  • Tea contains flavonoids, naturally occurring compounds that are believed to have antioxidant properties. Tea flavonoids often provide bioactive compounds that help to neutralize free radicals, which scientists believe, over time, damage elements in the body, such as genetic material and lipids, and contribute to chronic disease.
  • Tea is naturally low in caffeine. A cup of Black Tea, for example, contains about 40 milligrams of caffeine.
  • Prepared at home, tea costs about three cents per serving, cup or glass. Tea continues to remain one of the most economical beverages available, even the most expensive teas are less than 10 cents per serving.

Reuse Tea Bags

Don't toss that teabag!  After the first cup of tea is brewed, the teabag will start to lose flavor and strength--but do not fret.  You can get extra use out of those used teabags and here are a few ideas to guide you:

  • Use teabags on your puffy eyes. Warm or cold teabags can help refresh your eyes whether they're achy, tired or puffy.Tea Bag
  • Reduce plantar warts. Plantar warts can be treated with teabags because of the tannin in the tea. On the affected area, place a warm wet teabag for 10-20 minutes, and then leave it to dry naturally. If you repeat this for a couple of days, hopefully the wart will go.
  • Give yourself a facial. Facials can be expensive, but you can make one at home... using tea. Place a brewed tea bag into a bowl of hot water. Then position your head over the bowl, and then put a towel over your head to keep the steam in. It will leave your face glowing and radiant!
  • Soothe burns and nicks from razors by applying a wet teabag to the skin.
  • If you have sunburn, a bruise, stings or bites, or a cold sore you can put a damp tea bag onto the area and it will help to soothe the skin.
  • Polish wood surfaces.  Weak tea can be used to restore a nice shine to your wood floors and furniture. Steep a couple of used tea bags in warm water to make the weak tea. Then apply it to your wood surfaces with a soft rag or microfiber cloth. Give it a good buff, and your wood will be shining in no time!
  • If you have a big, dirty, greasy dish that seems impossible to clean, leave it overnight with hot water and a few brewed teabags. They will help break down the grease.
  • Clean dark leather shoes by wiping a wet, brewed teabag onto the surface of the shoe.
  • Control odors around the house with teabags. Put some used teabags in a bowl and place inside a smelly fridge. Leave overnight, remove the teabags and be left with the much nicer smell of tea!
  • Start A Fire.  You can use your old tea bags to make firestarters for your campfires! Squeeze the water out of your tea bags and allow them to dry thoroughly. Next, dip the dried tea bags in melted wax (like soy candle wax). Arrange the wax-dipped bags on a piece of tin foil or parchment paper. Once the wax has hardened, they’re ready to use! They light quickly, burn brightly, and will help you get a campfire going in no time.
