“This is a truly unique hybrid innovation that will pioneer a new category we’re calling refreshment coffee,” said Jaideep Kibe, vice president, Coca-Cola Trademark, Coca-Cola North America, who said the beverage is one of the company’s most successfully tested innovations in recent years.   “Coca-Cola® With Coffee is a product that is meant to be tried,” he added. “Because when you take that first sip, you realize there's nothing quite like it... It sips like a Coke and finishes like a coffee.”

And because the peak of the summer is the perfect time for a refreshing blend of Coca-Cola and iced coffee, members of the company’s Coca-Cola Insiders Club will have the exclusive opportunity to cool down in the hottest month of the year ahead of its official launch. The beverage subscription service, which launched in December 2019, gives 2,000 “Insiders” the chance to sign up to receive some of Coke’s newest drinks and surprise swag.

Coca-Cola® With Coffee is the latest output of the company’s “lift and shift” strategy to scale successful beverage innovations from market to market via an experimental, test-and-learn approach. The product was first piloted in Japan in 2018 and is now available in more than 30 markets around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Vietnam, Turkey and Italy. Each country, and the U.S. is no different, tailors the Coca-Cola® With Coffee recipe and packaging mix to meet local tastes.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for us to be more disciplined in how we launch, validate, refine and scale up big bets like this,” said Javier Meza, chief marketing officer for The Coca-Cola Company’s sparkling beverage portfolio. “We’re excited to bring Coca-Cola® With Coffee to the United States and apply learnings from so many markets that have gotten us to where we are today.”

Research shows that consumers are more open to trying new category-crossing drinks like Coca-Cola® with Coffee, which contains 69 mg of caffeine per 12-oz. serving, that push Coca-Cola into uncharted territory while staying true to its core values.

“In preliminary consumer testing, more than 80% of consumers who tried Coca-Cola® With Coffee said they would buy it,” Kibe said. “And in presentations with several of our major retailers and grocery chains, our customers would take a sip and immediately ask, ‘When can we have this?’” 

The launch is the latest creative extension of the Coca-Cola Trademark in the United States, following the recent rollouts of Coke Energy/Coke Energy Cherry, Cherry Vanilla Coke, Orange Vanilla Coke (and their zero-sugar counterparts).

“People’s taste preferences and lifestyles are changing, so we’re evolving our portfolio to meet those needs,” Meza said. “As a total beverage company, we are constantly listening to consumers and looking for ways to innovate and bring people more of the beverages they want.”

The World’s Youngest Q Grader Launches Joven Coffee

Francesca “Frankie” Volkema, who a year ago became the world’s youngest Q Grader at just 13 years old, is launching Joven Coffee (Spanish for “young”) to support the future of the coffee industry by providing financial stability to young farmers in at-risk regions and raising awareness of the opportunities for young people in the industry.

Joven features coffees that 1) score a composite 84 or better and 2) are produced by farmers under the age of 35. Joven’s initial line will consist of two single origin coffees, one originating from a collective of young farmers in Cauca, Colombia and the other from a group of young female farmers in Burundi, Africa.

An unprecedented first for the industry, Frankie passed the “Q” at 13 years old, a highly difficult series of tests from the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) to become the world’s youngest Q Grader. “The Q is tough, and to have a very young person like Frankie show interest in the exam and pass it was fun to see and a positive sign for our industry’s future” said Q Instructor Willem Boot. Her Q certification allows Frankie to officially evaluate and score green coffee, which in turn has a significant impact on that coffee’s price.

Frankie set out to create coffees that not only taste good, but also have a positive social impact. On a visit to Colombia with her father Tim, who owns and operates Sparrows Coffee and Schuil Coffee in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she saw firsthand the lack of young coffee farmers (average age of a Colombian farmer is 57). She decided to buy coffee from Cafinorte’s Young Coffee Producers Program, which supports 200 young people from Northern Cauca to become sustainable coffee producers. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic’s effect on specialty coffee, it is more critical than ever for farmers to operate knowing their whole crop will sell at a sustainable price. Frankie’s commitment to Cafinorte, as an example, includes purchasing almost half of their annual harvest for Joven

Frankie later learned about seven female entrepreneurs under the age of 35 from Burundi, Africa, who formed an investment group to purchase their own coffee mill. She will source and roast coffee from these extraordinary young female farmers as well.

“These experiences – from passing the Q, to visiting Colombia and talking with young farmers, to creating my own coffee line – have been so much fun and an incredible learning experience for me” said Frankie. “I’m excited to support these farmers in Cauca and Burundi and inspire more young people to become involved in the coffee industry.”

Now Is a Great Time to Start Sipping Peppermint Tea—Here's Why

If you're feeling anxious, try swapping your triple espresso for a cup of peppermint tea, says Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner, a writer for Real Simple Magazine.  In an online article, she shares these peppermint tea tips

Made from the dried leaves of the peppermint plant, peppermint tea is an herbal infusion with a fresh, soothing flavor. And unless it’s mixed with green, black, or white tea (check the label), peppermint tea is a caffeine-free, tea-free, zero-calorie beverage that packs in so many health benefits, it’s kind of wild that it comes in such a small package.

Peppermint tea can be enjoyed iced or hot, and a cup or two daily is the optimal amount to sip in all the health benefits, according to Lauren Cadillac, RD, CPT, and Bianca Kamhi, Certified Holistic Health Coach. Whether you’re in it purely for the fresh taste or eager to boost your digestion, ease your tension and more, here are a few added benefits to drinking peppermint tea

Calming Effects:
Some animal studies have shown that peppermint has a relaxing effect, especially on the gastrointestinal tract, demonstrating its ability to ease an upset stomach,” says Cadillac. “Peppermint has also been shown to help ease digestive symptoms of IBS such as gain, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Menthol, the active component in peppermint has been shown to help reduce headaches. Peppermint has also been shown to be a strong antioxidant and have antimicrobial and antiviral activity.” Ordering a cup of peppermint tea after a big meal? Great idea. Cadillac says you can expect digestive symptoms to improve 30 to 60 minutes after drinking peppermint tea, noting that people with heartburn or GERD may experience worsening of symptoms. 

Pain Relief:
Peppermint tea’s active ingredient, menthol, can help to relieve migraines and headaches. “The type of headaches that peppermint tea usually helps with are those that are caused by poor eating habits or daily stress,” Kamhi explains. “In these cases, these headaches typically restrict the amount of blood vessels that go to the brain, and peppermint tea has the ability to open them up, which therefore can relieve the tension causing the headache.”

Boost Immunity:
“Peppermint tea is an immune booster, due to its high levels of antiviral antibiotic properties,” Kamhi says. Therefore, sipping peppermint tea may help relieve symptoms of the common cold, thanks in part to menthol’s ability to thin out mucus and calm the increase of mucus in sinuses and the throat. “This can help you breathe better,” Kamhi says. “It can also help to get rid of bad bacterias in the upper respiratory tract, which is why it's a great immune booster.”    

Fresh Breath:
Not a gum chewer? Keep a bag of peppermint tea on hand for bad breath emergencies. “Peppermint holds a number of antibacterial properties which can kill germs in your mouth,” Kamhi says. “This, along with its pleasant and fresh smell, may help freshen your breath.” 
Swapping out water for peppermint tea? Consider sticking to just one, two, or three cups of peppermint tea per day, Cadillac suggests. “There is no caffeine so it can be consumed safely,” she says. “Individuals should just be aware of how tea makes them feel 60 minutes after consumption.”
